The Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary is an attractive manmade lake, completed in 1213 AD by the Royal Kakatiyas. It was built to serve as a source of water for irrigational purpose. This charming Sanctuary is spread over an area of 860 sq. kms. This is an ideal tourist spot located in the Warangal district of Telangana.
This plateau region gets even more interesting as it is surrounded by a mesmerizing range of low hills. The environment of the sanctuary and the lake both provide a beautiful scene full of lush green trees and wild animals.
A visit to this promising tourist spot will never disappoint you. Those intending to enter the sanctuary should take prior permission from the DFO, or the FRO.
Pakhal Lake has more than 130 different species of birds on record. The lake supports a large number of resident as well as migratory birds.
Birds spotted here include Egrets, Storks, Waterfowls, Waders, Raptors, Parakeets, Owls, Doves, Buntings, Flycatchers, Warblers, Cormorants, Finches, Dusky Eagle Owl, Crested Bunting, Brown fish Owl, Garganey, Northern Pintail, Red-crested Pochard. The Bar-headed Goose was sighted in 2016, and rare bird like the Thick-billed Pigeon was also sighted a while ago.
The best time to visit the Pakhal Lake is from the month of November to June. During the winters, the lake is covered with fog which gives a beautiful sight.
Lots of migratory birds are spotted here in the breeding season. The sanctuary is filled with a large variety of animals, including leopards, sambhars, nilgai, sloth bear, spotted deer, mountain gazelle, four horned antelope, wild boar, black buck, wild dogs, jackal, porcupine, panther. Reptiles such as python, cobra, monitor lizard and crocodile are also found here.
Bamboo trees, teak trees, dry and deciduous vegetation are scattered throughout the region with patches of evergreen trees and shrubs. Deciduous vegetation, which is mostly dominating includes, Adina Cordifolia, Bridelia Retusa, Bombax Ceiba, Cochlospermum Religiosum, Cleistanthus Collinus . The forest floor is covered with monsoon plants, shrubs and woody herbs as well.

By Air: One can take a flight to Hyderabad, then from there you need to take a cab directly for Pakhal Lake, or you can first go to Warangal and then go and visit Pakhal Lake. Distance between Warangal and Pakhal Lake is of about 50 kms.
By Rail: Warangal Railway Station is the nearest railway station, about 50 to 60 kms away. Warangal is well connected to other major cities and towns.
By Road: Warangal is well connected with important cities Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijawada, and Vishakhapatnam. Rented cars and jeeps are best ways to reach the Sanctuary by road.
