Bird Watching in Assam- Maguri Bill

Maguri Bill is located in Tinsukia in Assam, located in the northeast region of India. It is a beautiful swampy area created by the confluence of the rivers Dibru, Lohit, and Brahmaputra. This swamp created by these three mighty rivers has become the house for a variety of flora and fauna. Located close to the area is the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. The name “beel” has been given to the piece of land by the local fishermen after a certain kind of catfish.

About Maguri Bill – Birding destination in Assam

Maguri Bill is located southeast to the Dibru Saikhowa National Park in the Tinsukia district of Assam. It is renowned as the best bird watching destination in Assam and one of the best bird watching locations in India! Since one end of the swamp conveniently opens up to the Dibru river, it was still water at one end and moving water at another. This makes the landscape unique. As a result of the amalgamation of the two water bodies, you can find both freshwater and wetland fish in the bill! In fact, you can even go there using a boat! In winter, Maguri bill hosts the most beautiful of the migratory birds and in turn these birds to help the bill! They make sure that the water is always moving and is never stagnant and does not breed mosquitoes!

Birds that are regular visitors

The Common wagtail or the Balimahi is the first to grace the “beel” with its presence. With the arrival of this majestic bird, you will know that monsoon is officially over. They will be here around the beginning of September, and right after they will follow the other migratory birds. It feeds on the smaller birds and insects found in the swamp, which believe me are great in numbers. This also helps the flora in the region by safeguarding the nectar from insects. It is a small bird that has black and white hues and keeps twitching its tail and hence the name- wagtail!
The other prominent figure in the Maguri bill bird pageant is the Ruddy shelduck. Also called Brahminy duck in India, it is a sight to watch for and is abundant near the Maguri bill. It is a little waterfowl around 60 inches in length. It is a migratory bird and only spends the winter here. It is generally found in South eastern Europe and Central Asia. The whole body is orange brown though the head and neck are way paler than the rest of the body. It has a loud honking call, which can immediately attract your attention.

Best time to visit Maguri Bill

All the migratory birds visit around winter, and that is probably why the best time to visit Maguri bill would be between November and April. However since there might be light rains and a slight chill in the weather, it would be advisable for tourists to carry light winter wear. Keep your cameras ready, as you will see the most beautiful birds flying around and perched on top of trees all around the “beel.”
