Overview of Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa

One of the smallest Goa wildlife sanctuaries, the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 8 sq. kms. Bird watching location Bondla is located 3000 ft. above the sea level on the lush foothills of the Western Ghats. The Rangado river flows on the east and Mandovi river is on the north of the forest. The lush green vegetation of the Sanctuary provides a natural ecosystem.

The Bondla national park contains a Botanical Garden and a Rose Garden in its premises. Places like these principally attract the ‘young’ nature lovers. The Nature Education Centre, exclusively established here, imparts helpful knowledge concerning the wildlife to its visitors by showcasing a number of exhibits, books and videos.

Bondla wildlife sanctuary provides home ground to an oversized variety of untamed animals and a variety of bird species. Late evenings and nights are very pleasant. Bondla is a Paradise for Eco-Tourists.

Best time to visit Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary

The best time to visit this Sanctuary is between November and March, because in these months the sun is not that harsh. A lucky person can even spot some migratory birds which fly down to India to escape the harsh winters.

Bondla is an amazing spot for bird-watching. One can spot a variety of birds that include Brown fish owl, Ruby throated yellow bulbul, Indian scimitar babbler, Oriental dwarf kingfisher, Pied Cuckoo, Clamator, Asian Koel, Eudynamys, Blue Rock Pigeon, White-throated Kingfisher, White-naped Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, Long-tailed Shrike, Indian Robin, Ashy Prinia, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Jungle Myna, Paddyfield Pipit, Greater Coucal, Centropus, Wood Sandpiper, Jungle Bush Quail, Besra Sparrowhawk, Brahminy Kite, Short-toed Snake-Eagle, Common Buzzard, Savanna Nightjar etc.

Popular Spots at Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa

This sanctuary is spread over an area of just 8 sq. kms. Because of the fact that that it is a very small sanctuary in size, the sanctuary is better as a wildlife resort. The initial objective of this sanctuary was to set up a refuge for orphaned and injured animals.

Apart from wildlife species, the sanctuary is also home ground to many different birds and it also consists of a zoo and a deer safari park. To know more about the bird spotting areas, one can contact the Park Range Office.

Flora and Fauna at Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa

The inhabitants of this sanctuary can be really scary at times but are fascinating as well. There are watch-towers where wild animals like Gaur, Sambar, Wild Boar can be seen at water-holes. Gaur, the state animal is frequently seen.

This Wildlife Sanctuary has abundant vegetation. The area is covered with moist deciduous forests, with small patches of Evergreens and Canes along the nullahs. The state tree, Matti, Jamba, Kindall and Rosewood are common here. Lawns, exotic trees, varieties of flowers and colorful flowers in the middle of the forest give a pleasant sight for the viewers’ eyes.

How to reach :

By Air: The nearest airport is 48 kms away which is the Dabolim Goa International Airport. The airport is connected to different cities and towns around the globe.

By Rail: Kulem Suravali station is the nearest railway station from Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Road: Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Northeastern side of Goa. It is close to Ponda. Tourists can take NH4 to reach Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Buses are easily available from Panjim and Margoa at regular interval.
