The most suitable time for a spectacular birding experience is during the spring season where birds are out and about like the rest of nature; birders can find the four species of pheasants that are native to Bhutan. The biodiversity in this place is maintained and conserved by the people who live here along with the rich culture that exists in harmony with nature. It makes this birding experience unique and serene.
The quaint ambiance of Mongar, its semi-tropical climate and the broadleaved forests make it an ideal space for birds to thrive. Birding in this region is easy and photographing birds does not take too much effort. The town of Thrashigang leads to Mongar via the Korilla pass. This route between the Korilla region and the Ngatsang village is a central birding site having several species of birds.
On simply walking around the place or taking a short drive, one stumbles into enough birds to make it an excellent birding excursion. The variety that you can expect to see there includes the Super Skulker, Red-faced Liocichla, some species of Laughingthrush. Mongar and the adjoining region form the Mongar- Samdrup- Jongkhar region of Eastern Bhutanese birding belt. Birders on the watch out for exotic species can also come across species of the Black Eagle, Oriental Cuckoo, Cuckoo, Speckled Wood Pigeon, Brown Parrot Bill, Darjeeling Woodpecker etc.
Apart from being a popular birding spot, the forests are beautiful in their own way. They are coniferous, and trees such as oak, birch, maple and beech are commonly found here. Several medicinal and herbal plants are found in this region. This place also has 10-15 species of mammals which includes the nearly endemic Golden Langur, Himalayan Giant Squirrel, Yellow-throated Marten and the Himalayan Goral.
Mongar Dzong is a must visit place when you are not birding. It was built in place of Shongar Dzong which was charred by fire in 1929. Following Dzong tradition, no drawings and nails were used during its construction.
Bhutan government is very conscious about the number of tourists entering and exiting Bhutan. You may have to take permit to visit certain places and your tour operator should be aware about it.
By Air: Paro is the nearest airport, 400 Km from Mongar.
By Road: It takes around 10-12 hours to reach Mongar from Thimpu. You can drive, hire a taxi, avail services of standard bus or hire luxury bus for a group to travel within Bhutan. From Thimpu or Samdrup you can take Bumthang – Ura Highway. From Samdrup Jongkhar it takes around 13 hours to reach Mongar.
