Covered with snow-capped mountains, this place is truly a magical experience. Munsyari is famous for its beautiful view, birding, and high altitude trekking. It was previously a restricted area but is now a popular place for trekking. It is situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state, this hill station is perched at an altitude of 2298 mts above sea level.
it is a fast-growing tourist destination. Munsyari also falls on the ancient salt route from Tibet and is at the entrance of the Johar Valley, which extends along the path of the Gori Ganga river to its source at the Milam Glacier. Munsyari is also referred to as ‘Little Kashmir’.
Munsyari offers an opportunity of spotting the state bird of Uttarakhand- the Himalayan Monal. Not only this, while you’re in Munsyari, you’ll also spot the White Throated Tit which happens to be a critically endangered bird. Other feathers which you can tuck in your birding cap include Grey Bellied Tesia, Robin Accentor, Himalayan Cutia, Green-tailed Sunbird, Satyr Tragopan, Chestnut Crowned Warbler, Great Crested Tit, Golden Eagle, Snowy Browed Flycatcher, Red Headed Bullfinch, Bearded Vulture, Snow Partridge, Eurasian Woodcock, Hill Partridge, Spotted Laughing Thrush, Rose Finch, Great Throated Parrotbill, Black Throated Parrotbill, Pied Thrush and many more. Now let me tell you about the best time for birding in Munsyari. In winter, this area is engulfed by a thick blanket of snow. The view in winters is mind-blowing. But the best time to bird is in summers when the snow has melted and the hills and valleys are covered in lush greenery, and that period is March to June.
Munsyari has a good number of spots where birding activity thrives. Take, for instance, the Gori Ganga Basin which happens to be the home of over 320 species of birds including many rare, endemic, and endangered ones. Are you aware that this basin has been designated as “An important bird area” by the Birdlife International?
Another happening spot would be the surrounding forest areas of Nanda Devi Temple. The road between Ratapani and Munsyari is also famous as a birding spot but in the mornings.
Apart from these, Munsyari offers other activities and places of interest like Birthi Falls, Betuli Dhar, Maheshwari Kund, and an excellent view of Nandaghungti, Nandakot, Shiplakot, Rambha and Panchachuli Peak. Apart from Birding, Munsyari is also famous for its treks to the snow-capped mountains and glaciers. Even first-timers would enjoy these. So go, take a look and enjoy the place.

This is a magical place. Its almost 300 Kms from Kathgodam, the last railway station on the way to Munsyari. It took more than 10 hours to reach Munsyari. We reached in night and went for sleep. The next morning, when I woke up to the view of huge snow capped mountains just in front of me, the fatigue of last day travel all went away in a moment. Next 3 days were full of birding. We spotted Cheer Pheasant couple multiple times which was highlight of the tour. Must go place, at least once in lifetime.

Hello,
I am from Gujarat and I am planning a trip to Munsyari with my wife in April/May 2021. We both are birders and would like to know if there is bird guide in Munsyari. If there is a bird guide then what would be the per day charge for the same. We have been to Sattal many times and Chopta once.
Greetings for the day from The Birders Hub.
You can hire Prashant, Neer, Naveen or Anil who are good guides for Munsyari. There profile is available on website
