Royal Manas National Park is popular as the “Conservation Showpiece of the Kingdom”. This region is blessed with a tropical and a subtropical ecosystem that encourages and supports the growth of a wide array of flora and fauna which flourish here.
The best time to visit the park for a birding excursion is during the winter months between November and February when the migratory birds can be easily sighted. The weather is quite pleasant, and minimum rainfall is experienced by this region.
This place is a treasure house of around 365 bird species among which the Emerald Cuckoo, Spotted Wren-Babbler, White-bellied Heron, Pallas Fish Eagle, Wreathed Hornbill, Pied Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill and Rufous-necked Hornbill are commonly visible. Birds that are found here can be studied by classifying them on the basis of their dietary grounds: frugivores, nectarivores, granivores, insectivores and omnivores.
Apart from being an excellent spot for birders, wildlife watchers also get the golden opportunity to spot the Royal Bengal Tiger, Clouded Leopards, Gaur, Hispid Hare, Pygmy Hog, Black Bear, Asian Elephant, Golden Langur and species of snakes such as King Cobra, Vine Snake and more.
This National Park is a great site for birding as well as adventurous expeditions such as hiking, and tropical safari on elephants, rafting, mountain biking, horse riding, boating, fishing and swimming. The locals in the region are amiable people and help you learn the wild better. You can also get a touch of their culture, traditions and customs.
By Air: The nearest airport is Paro International airport near Thimpu. From there you can hire a cab to the Royal Manas National Park.
By Road: Private cars and buses are also available from Thimphu, Panbang, Tongsa, Dzongkhag, Zhemgang and Tingtibi.
Some people also choose to trek from Gomphu to the Royal Manas National Park on the Eastern Himalayas.
