Trongsa is located smack in the middle of Bhutan, and it is enclosed by mountains on two sides. Trongsa is densely populated with a wide array of flora and fauna including hundreds of species of birds. This was an important political hub when its location was a central attraction for monarchs to set their base in this region. Due to the surrounding wild green, this place is home to a lot many plants and animals. The dense jungles, the high mountains and pristine natural environment make it the right spot for birds to build their nests here and for all natural life to prosper and flourish. Trongsa is one amongst the best birding sites in Bhutan because many of the country’s rarest birds find a home in this region.

When to plan a birding excursion to Trongsa?

Most of the birding throughout Bhutan takes place in the spring season between March and May. The period of the first two weeks of June is statistically the key time for bird watchers to find the rarest birds easily. Spring is the time when all of life is in its prime, the flowers in full bloom, fruits ripening and birds come out during this season to enjoy the many joys of nature.

Birds that you can spot in Trongsa, Bhutan

Trongsa is home to hundreds of species of birds. If you are here in the right season, this would be the best birding experience for you as could easily spot and photograph Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-Babbler, White-browed Scimitar-Babbler, Grey-bellied Tesia, Crested Bunting, Steak-breasted Scimitar Babblers, Rufous Woodpecker, Long-tailed Shrike, Prinias, Common Green Magpie, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Minivets and Common Kestrel. This place is the niche for about 300-400 species of birds that are best visible in temperate temperatures and little rain.

The plant and animal diversity in this region is unparalleled because of careful conservation and the range of climatic conditions available for life to flourish. Falling under the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot and because of its central location in the country, birding is especially fun and successful in this area with several migratory birds, resident birds, partial migrants, rare, endangered and vulnerable birds. Apart from birds, several medicinal herbs and various animal species also find their abode here.

Explore Trongsa, Bhutan

The commanding Dzong of Trongsa, which is located above the magnificent river Mangde Chhu is a sight to behold because of its sheer architectural genius. The tower of Trongsa Royal Heritage Museum that overlooks the Dzong is an archive of a glorious history of the Bhutanese empire. The meditation retreat of Taphey Goemba can be reached on taking a short detour from Trongsa. This place is certainly going to bring you peace and calm. The famous restaurant by the name Oyster House serves various traditional delicacies. The Thruepang palace is another spot that you must explore while you are in Trongsa.

How to reach :

On taking a flight to the Paro International Airport, one could hail a cab to Trongsa.

Buses travel to Trongsa from Gelephu in southern Bhutan, the border town of Phuentsholing and from Thimphu.

The cab service is also available from Phuentsholing, Thimphu, Bumthang, Gelephu and Trashigang. Someone visiting from India can also access the rail service that takes them to the border town of Hasimara from where you cross the border to Bhutanese town Phuentsholing and take a cab from there.
